Domaine Pierre Gaillard Cote Rotie Rose Pourpre 2005 750ml
Cote Rotie, Rhone, France
Wine Advocate 91
Not surprisingly, the 2005s are tannic longer-term wines with a style not dissimilar from the Cote Roties of 1995, which were tannic and backward, yet for the most part have never come around. As for the top cuvee, the dense, dark ruby/purple 2005 Cote Rotie Rose Pourpre displays smoky, olive notes intermixed with spicy new oak, creme de cassis, licorice, and incense. The wine is full-bodied, powerful, and very backward and tannic. The purity is there, the texture is there, so I suspect this is one that will come through in good form and possibly be better than my initial rating.

Very dark – definitely more poupre than rose. Right out to rim. A bit swamped by oak on the nose. Luscious fruit underneath mind you so it will probably come right in the end but there are oak tannins on the finish too which detract from it at the moment.
